Tiago Pires fifth in Brazil
The third event of the 2012 ASP World Tour, Billabong Rio Pro, ended today. Hawaii’s John John Florence won the event after beating Joel Parkinson in an impressive final.
Tiago "Saca" Pires was at his prime in this event, despite a slow start in a first round defeat to Miguel Pupo, even after scoring an amazing 9.07. In the second round he beat Kai Otton in a tough matchup.
Tougher still was his heat against last year's world number three Owen Wright in the third round. Tiago managed to read the tricky conditions of the sea better than his opponent and ended up taking the win. Portugal’s top surfer won once more in the Round 4 and again beating a favorite - Jordy Smith – along with Michel Bourez. Tiago snatched a great wave with a super technical tube ride, a wave that decided the heat.
In the quarterfinals Saca met up with Joel Parkinson. Despite his good surfing he ended up losing to the Gold Coast surfer.
With this fifth place, Tiago Pires is now ranked 13 in the ASP 2012 World Tour ratings. Next stop is Fiji, from June 3 to 15.
